INTERFACE

Hearts Deluxe is a very intuitive program to use. If you want to play a card - you click on it.  If you want to check the score you click on the score pad.

TABLE TOP

          Click on a card to select it. 



          Click on a card already chosen for a pass to unselect it. 



            The PASS button will appear closest to the player who will 	   
             receive your pass.

                Click on the SCORE PAD on the lower left of the table to   
                 show your score.


         Click on the CUP OF JOE on the lower right of the table to tell 
          the computer to finish the hand for you.


APPLE MENU

ABOUT HEARTS: 
Contains information on SHAREWARE registration. Do the right thing.

FILE MENU

NEW GAME:  
Begins a new game with the current settings.

BOSS COMING:  
A panic button (apple-B) in case you really should be working.

LOAD NEW OPPONENTS:  
Will ask you to select a new group of adversaries and load them in.

PRINT:  
Prints out a registration form.

QUIT:  
Quits Hearts.

RULES MENU

JACK OF DIAMONDS:  
When checked, the jack of diamonds is worth -10. 

QUEEN OF SPADES:  
When checked, the queen of spades is worth +13.

NO TRICK RULE:  
When checked, players receive a -5 bonus for taking no points in a hand.

ROTATE LEAD: 
When checked, the lead rotates, instead of the two of clubs deciding the lead.

TURN OFF PASSING: 
When checked, no passing will occur.  All hands are “keepers.”

TWO OF CLUBS MUST LEAD: 
When checked, the two of clubs must be led by whoever has it on the first trick.

BLEED ON FIRST TRICK: 
When checked, you may play hearts or the queen of spades on the first trick.

QUEEN DOESN'T BREAK HEARTS: 
When checked, playing the queen of spades does not "break" hearts.

OPTIONS MENU

HANDICAP:
This pop-up menu sets your initial score.

SCORE:  
This pop-up menu sets point limit of the game.

SMALL SETTINGS:  
These three options let you do small things....

WINDOWS: 
This menu changes the pictures in the window.  Note that this feature does not work in Black-and-White.

TUTOR MODE:  
The computer coaches the player in various aspects of the game.

DEMONSTRATION:  
When checked, the computer will play itself.

TURN EARS ON:  
When checked, voice control of Hearts Deluxe is enabled.  If you have the Apple Speech Manager installed, the "Turn Ears On" feature will enable you to play Hearts using only your voice.  If your computer supports the Apple Speech Manager, open the Speech Setup control panel and turn it on.  (For general questions regarding voice recognition on your Apple computer, please consult your Apple manual.) 

SKILL LEVEL MENU

SMART-DUMB:  
These pop-up menus set the I.Q. of your opponents. 

DIABOLO:  
This setting will make the game much harder to win; your opponents will gang up on you...

These options are reserved for registered users.

SHOW ME MENU

STATISTICS:  
Shows stats about the game.  It does not reset between games.

LAST TRICK:  
Shows the last trick played.

TELEPATHY:  
Shows a "window" into your opponent's minds.  This feature is provided for its curiosity value, and to add realism for those of us lucky enough to read minds normally.  When this menu is chosen you may also click on your opponents heads to see their last thought.
